The Resisters by Gish Jen Knopf An audacious marvel of a novel about baseball and a future America, from the always inventive and exciting author of The Love Wife and Who's Irish The time: a not-so-distant future. The place: AutoAmerica. The land: half under water. The Internet--the new face of government--is "Aunt Nettie": a mix of artificial intelligence, surveillance technology, and pesky maxims. The people have been divided, and no one is happy. The angel-fair "Netted" still have jobs and literally occupy the high ground, while the mostly coppertoned "Surplus" live on swampland if they're lucky, on the water if they're not.
The story: To a Surplus couple--he was a professor, she's still a lawyer--is born a Blasian girl with a golden arm. At two, Gwen is hurling her stuffed animals from the crib; by ten she can hit whatever target she likes with a baseball; her teens find her playing happily in an underground Surplus league. When AutoAmerica re-enters the Olympics-with a special eye on beating ChinRussia--Gwen attracts interest. Soon she's at Net U, falling in love with her coach and considering "crossing over," even as her mother is challenging the AutoAmerican Way with lawsuits that will prove very dangerous.
An astonishing story of an America that seems only too possible, and of a family struggling to maintain its humanity in circumstances that threaten their every value--even their very existence.
Lighting the Fire A Cherokee Journey from Dropout to Professor by Steve Russell Miniver Press Abandoned by his Cherokee father to be raised by his white mother, Stephen Teehee was abandoned again to the care of his 75 year old grandfather and 60 year old grandmother in the fading oil boomtown of Bristow, Oklahoma The Russells did the best they could with what they had.` The Russells met in Indian Territory, the western terminus of the Trail of Tears. They told their Cherokee grandson the truth about his origins and offered up the most famous writer and speaker of their lives, Will Rogers, as a Cherokee role model as they read their grandson the newspaper every day and assured him that he was a smart boy who should “go to college,” something nobody in his family had done. What followed were ten years of failure and misery that included three high schools. The attempts by the Russell elders to light the fire of curiosity in the boy were countered by an indifferent mother, a hostile father, and public schools that offered Indians “shop” or art.Stephen Teehee chose a side when he changed his name to Russell and vowed to make his grandparents proud, a vow that would have to be kept posthumously. Steve Russell talked his way into The University of Texas on the second try and was admitted with no high school credits and no test scores. He graduated magna cum laude and went on to take a law degree from Texas and a graduate degree from Nevada.

Cinemaphagy: on the psychedelic classical form of Tobe Hooper by Scout Tafoya Miniver Press He directed The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, the most infamous and visceral horror film of all time. He directed Poltergeist, one of the most successful ghost stories of the 20th century. He was called a Master of Horror and he worked with screen legends James Mason, Neville Brand, Karen Black, Fred Willard, Dennis Hopper, Anthony Perkins, Mel Ferrer & Marie Windsor. He elegantly navigated the works of pulp legends Ambrose Bierce, Stephen King, Cornell Woolrich, & Richard Matheson. And yet Tobe Hooper is one of the most unsung film artists of the last fifty years. How did the man famous for creating some of the most endearing images of terrible things, who did for the hardware store what Jaws did for the beach, become someone in need of rescue?Cinemaphagy is the study of an artist’s working life, his bountiful creativity, his ardent cinephilia, his prolific career in film and television, his lasting influence beyond the saw. Horror movie directors are too frequently pigeonholed as purveyors of the macabre but in truth Hooper was one of the most boldly experimental genre filmmakers in the game, fusing a Texan psychedelia with an earnest classical style gleaned from years watching classic films. Tobe Hooper’s life and work is like four years of film school, and every film he made, no matter how thankless, no matter how silly the assignment on paper, became a rich, roiling text on the political underside of the American cinema. No one made movies about cinema less ostentatiously and with more love. Movies with lurid titles like Spontaneous Combustion and The Mangler hide essays about the history of labor, Cold War iconography, and the corrosive legacy of a culture built on lies. Tobe Hooper is still too often represented as a man with a monolithic legacy, the creator of one great film and nothing else. It’s well past time the depth and breadth of his obsessions and his gifts were discussed by a culture that ignored his years of hard work. Tobe Hooper directed The Texas Chain Saw Massacre but that is literally just the start of one of the most exciting, free, and expressionistic bodies of work in the American cinema.

Smoldering Embers: On the set of Director Tobe Hooper's Spontaneous Combustion by Stan Giesea Miniver Press Smoldering Embers is a unique, day-to-day account of life on the set of a motion picture, chronicling the making of the notorious “Spontaneous Combustion,” from the late, great director Tobe Hooper’s (The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Poltergeist, Lifeforce). Here is an opportunity for the reader to meet the cast and crew of talented craftsmen, technicians and artisans and to follow their progress as they work together to realize Hooper’s vision. Summarily dismissed or ignored in its initial release in 1990, Spontaneous Combustion has since enjoyed something of a resurgence in interest and appreciation. Starring Brad Dourif (One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest) and Melinda Dillon (Close Encounters of the Third Kind), Hooper’s dark tale of nuclear conspiracy and betrayal resonates now more than ever and Smoldering Embers provides a fascinating glimpse behind-the-scenes for anyone with an interest in the horror genre, Hooper’s career in particular, or just filmmaking in general.Derived from a contemporaneous account composed during production on the film, the book not only serves as an invaluable research tool for academics and film students alike, but also provides a window into Hooper’s working methods and an entertaining glimpse into the fascinating craft of moviemaking.

Persuasion Getting to the Other Side by Joe Singer Carolina Academic Press Lawyers have techniques to persuade decision-makers about what the law should be. Their normative toolkit uses arguments based on common values, storytelling, and framing to help us see our own values in a new light. These tools of reasoned argument enable us to engage in civil debate about divisive issues and to justify decisions in hard cases. Persuasion: Getting to the Other Side categorizes the arguments that lawyers use in debates about ambiguous or contested legal questions. It also explains how judges justify their decisions about what the law should be when the case involves competing values and there are plausible arguments on both sides. The goal is to provide law students with a toolkit to help them engage in reasoned arguments about what the law should be.

Barren Island by Carol Zoref New Issues Poetry and Prose WINNER OF THE AWP AWARD FOR THE NOVEL(2017) NATIONAL BOOK AWARD LONGLISTNATIONAL JEWISH BOOK AWARD WINNER GOLDBERG PRIZE How does one remember a world that literally no longer exists? How do the moral imperatives to do so correspond to the personal needs that make it possible? Told from the point-of-view of Marta Eisenstein Lane on the occasion of her 80th birthday, Barren Island is the story of a factory island in New York’s Jamaica Bay, where the city’s dead horses and other large animals were rendered into glue and fertilizer from the mid-19th century until the 1930’s. The island itself is as central to the story as the members of the Jewish, Greek, Italian, Irish, and African-American factory families that inhabit it, including those who live their entire lives steeped in the smell of burning animal flesh.
The story begins with the arrival of the Eisenstein family, immigrants from Eastern Europe, and explores how the political and social upheavals of the 1930’s affect them and their neighbors in the years between the stock market crash of October 1929 and the start of World War II ten years later. Labor strife, union riots, the New Deal, the World’s Fair, and the struggle to save European Jews from the growing threat of Nazi terror inform this novel as much as the explosion of civil and social liberties between the two World Wars. Barren Island, finally, is a novel in which the existence of God is argued with a God that may no longer exist or, perhaps, never did.
When Should Law Forgive? by Martha Minow Norton What can forgiveness achieve in this age of resentment? A towering and beloved figure in legal scholarship, Martha Minow explores the complicated intersection between law, justice, and forgiveness, asking whether law should encourage individuals to forgive and when should the courts, public officials, and specific laws forgive? Minow examines these questions through sometimes- troubling cases― comparing the legal treatment of juvenile offenses in the US with international responses to child soldiers, for example, and the legal forgiveness of corporate debt with the lack of forgiveness for consumer debt and student loans.
With compassion and acumen, Minow acknowledges that there are certainly grounds for both individuals and societies to withhold forgiveness, but argues that there are also many places where letting go of justified grievances can make law more just, not less. This type of lawful forgiveness might also nudge individuals and societies toward the respect and generosity that comes with apology and restitution. Forgiveness does not change the past, but it does enlarge the future.

Frankel-y Speaking About WWII in the South Pacific by Stanley A. Frankel Miniver Press Stanley Frankel didn’t want to be a soldier. But the draft board had different plans. The leader of college protests against the US entering WWII found himself in the 37th Infantry Division, shipped to the Pacific Theater. While in the army, he wrote journal entries, letters to his dear Irene, and articles that slipped past the censor to be published in newspapers and magazines in the US while the war was raging. Frankel served from 1941 to 1946, and was then ordered to stay on after the war as part of a team tasked with writing the historical account of his division. After that he became a successful advertising executive, award-winning professor, political speechwriter for national candidates, and beloved husband, father, and grandfather. In this memoir, Frankel tells his story interspersed with in-the-moment journals, letters, and articles he wrote while stationed in the Pacific. Take a journey through time with this raw first-hand account, and experience what it was like to be in the jungles and battles of an intense and brutal part of World War II. In his later writings, see the post–World War II world through the eyes of a veteran selected as the official historian of his division. Unforgettable stories leap off the page, from the chilling to the hilarious. Feel the terror as an explosive flies through a window into a huddle of soldiers. Laugh at the account of soldiers delighting in the discovery of an abandoned factory flooded with ice-cold beer. Frankel describes serving alongside Private Rodger Young who gave up his life in New Georgia to save 20 men of his patrol and inspired a song. He brings us into the Rescue of Bilibid Prison, and the battles of Bougainville and Guadalcanal. This is a wise, honest, and beautifully written book for anyone who has wondered about the realities of combat, the journey of shouldering a duty you did not choose, or the experience of being among the “greatest generation” who came of age in the Depression and fought in World War II. This edition features a new introduction from Frankel's grandson Adam, who followed in Stan’s footsteps to become a political speechwriter, including writing speeches for President Obama in the White House, and who is now an author himself, with his family memoir, The Survivors.

Cockney Girl by Gilda Moss Haber, PHD Miniver Press Cockney Girl is a second-generation Jewish-British child’s eyewitness account of tumultuous East London and her eccentric family in England 1934-1950. The writer was then aged 5-20. This zeitgeist, before, during and after World War two, is based on memories and diaries and is, according to ElieWiesel, ‘unmapped history’. Both cockneys, friend Joycey Kennel and I, roamed East London most Saturdays while my operaphile mother set and permed ladies hair and my deaf, barber father, shaved dockers for pub nights and Christmas. One Christmas, Mummy dropped me, aged five, at a Dickensian orphanage for two years, I joyously returned to sooty East London witnessing the 600,000 Fascist - Anti-Fascist 1936 Cable Street Battle and was bridesmaid at aunt Mitzi’s posh wedding. In 1939, London children were hastily evacuated from expected Nazi bombing to country foster parents who ranged fromkind to concupiscent. When I was 14,Mummy sent me to The White House Jewish refugee orphanage: Great Chesterford. Here, contemporaneously with Anne Frank, aged 15, I began my diary, rejoined the tribe and, while a teenager, met Yank servicemen and wounded British soldiers. With peace, aged 16, I returned home, a stranger, attended LSE and immigrated to America, but remained a Cockney Girl.

Naked Truth: The Fall and Rise of Dona Spier by Dona Spier and Chris Epting Miniver Press “If starting an underage relationship with a 40 something-year-old Bill Cosby was the solution, then just how bad was the problem?” Dona Speir’s new memoir, ‘Naked Truth: The Fall and Rise of Dona Speir takes you from the depths of child abuse, drug and alcohol addiction, being preyed upon by powerful men like Bill Cosby, to the rarified world of international modeling and global jet-setting, being a Playboy Centerfold photographed by the world-famous Arny Freytag to being the star of seven Andy Sidaris action adventure films. Love on a Small Island by Judy Pomeranz Miniver Press Whether between parent and child, husband and wife, friends, siblings, or paramours, love is by far the most compelling and fulfilling, but also the most complex and challenging of the roads we negotiate in the long journey through life. The novellas and stories contained within Love on a Small Island are all built upon and revolve around these relationships. In them, Judy Pomeranz presents us with all manner of individuals involved in all manner of relationships doing the best they can to get through the day, and with luck perhaps even figure out how to find happiness and thrive. Tied together only by the common setting of Manhattan and the urban experience that implies, her disparate characters are variously confident, insecure, tough, fragile, bold, timid, tormented, serene, guarded, or open, and occasionally all the above. Like the rest of us, they put one foot in front of the other and hope to reach a place that feels good and right. Also like the rest of us, they rarely quite get there, and when they do it rarely lasts. And yet they persist. Because that’s what people do, and that’s what life is about. These are people we may or may not admire, and may or may not even like, but they are all people whom we relate to and ultimately find ourselves caring for and about.

Straight into Darkness by Megan Volpert Miniver Press Of all the Heartbreakers tracks available to come through her headphones as Megan Volpert stood over train tracks preparing to surrender to the psychedelic blindness of simple human misery, “Straight Into Darkness” is the one that did. In this highly philosophical and deeply personal exploration of one obscure Tom Petty song, Volpert’s essays comb through the musical, historical, rhetorical and sociological implications of a forgotten gem in a legendary catalog with satisfying results. In the face of powerlessness, we rebel anyway. She judges the forty years of Petty’s career with one finger on the pulse of Bob Dylan and an occasional whiff of Bruce Springsteen, looking at the sometimes violent mob scene of concerts as a type of transcendence. Straight Into Darkness offers a compelling vision of rock and roll fandom where the songwriter’s hardworking sense of humor is enough to save us from absurdity. All you need is Albert Camus and a couple of chords. Long after dark, Petty and Volpert each emerge as modern mystics. Megan Volpert is the author of eight books on communication and popular culture, including two Lambda Literary Award finalists. Her MFA in Creative Writing is from Louisiana State University and she writes regularly for PopMatters. She has been teaching high school English in Atlanta for over a decade and was 2014 Teacher of the Year. She edited the American Library Association-honored anthology This assignment is so gay: LGBTIQ Poets on the Art of Teaching. Volpert used to drive a scooter and has “What would Tom Petty do?” tattooed over her heart.

Saving the News: Why the Constitution Calls for Government Action to Preserve Freedom of Speech by Martha Minow Oxford University Press
A detailed argument of how our government has interfered in the direction of America's media landscape that traces major transformations in media since the printing press and charts a path for reform.
In Saving the News, Martha Minow takes stock of the new media landscape. She focuses on the extent to which our constitutional system is to blame for the current parlous state of affairs and on our government's responsibilities for alleviating the problem. As Minow shows, the First Amendment of the US Constitution assumes the existence and durability of a private industry. Although the First Amendment does not govern the conduct of entirely private enterprises, nothing in the Constitution forecloses government action to regulate concentrated economic power, to require disclosure of who is financing communications, or to support news initiatives where there are market failures. Moreover, the federal government has contributed financial resources, laws, and regulations to develop and shape media in the United States. Thus, Minow argues that the transformation of media from printing presses to the internet was shaped by deliberate government policies that influenced the direction of private enterprise. In short, the government has crafted the direction and contours of America's media ecosystem.
Building upon this basic argument, Minow outlines an array of reforms, including a new fairness doctrine, regulating digital platforms as public utilities, using antitrust authority to regulate the media, policing fraud, and more robust funding of public media. As she stresses, such reforms are not merely plausible ideas; they are the kinds of initiatives needed if the First Amendment guarantee of freedom of the press continues to hold meaning in the twenty-first century.

Social Media, Freedom of Speech, and the Future of our Democracy Edited by Lee C. Bollinger and Geoffrey R. Stone
A broad explanation of the various dimensions of the problem of "bad" speech on the internet within the American context.
One of the most fiercely debated issues of this era is what to do about "bad" speech-hate speech, disinformation and propaganda campaigns, and incitement of violence-on the internet, and in particular speech on social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter. In Social Media, Freedom of Speech, and the Future of our Democracy, Lee C. Bollinger and Geoffrey R. Stone have gathered an eminent cast of contributors--including Hillary Clinton, Amy Klobuchar, Sheldon Whitehouse, Newt Minow, Cass Sunstein, Jack Balkin, Emily Bazelon, and others--to explore the various dimensions of this problem in the American context. They stress how difficult it is to develop remedies given that some of these forms of "bad" speech are ordinarily protected by the First Amendment. Bollinger and Stone argue that it is important to remember that the last time we encountered major new communications technology-television and radio-we established a federal agency to provide oversight and to issue regulations to protect and promote "the public interest." Featuring a variety of perspectives from some of America's leading experts on this hotly contested issue, this volume offers new insights for the future of free speech in the social media era.

Knocked-Up Cinderella by Julie Hammerle Entangled Publishing I’m a walking contradiction. School principal who liberally drops the F bomb. Agnes is not just beautiful, she's clever and determined. Despite her uncommon beauty, she refuses to conform to society's standards. She's also the sister of the man who holds Fletcher's career as a spy in his hands. And that makes her completely off-limits.
She thought she could change him... Tall, impossibly broad, and handsome as a sin, Fletcher Banks is a brazen scoundrel. Maybe spending more time with her will release him from his infatuation with her without falling further from her brother's good graces. But the more time they spend together, the harder it is to deny that this infatuation may be more than lust...
The Last Letter by Rebecca Yarros Entangled Publishing Beckett,
If you’re reading this, well, you know the last-letter drill. You made it. I didn’t. Get off the guilt train, because I know if there was any chance you could have saved me, you would have.
I need one thing from you: get out of the army and get to Telluride.
My little sister Ella’s raising the twins alone. She’s too independent and won’t accept help easily, but she has lost our grandmother, our parents, and now me. It’s too much for anyone to endure. It’s not fair.
And here’s the kicker: there’s something else you don’t know that’s tearing her family apart. She’s going to need help.
So if I’m gone, that means I can’t be there for Ella. I can’t help them through this. But you can. So I’m begging you, as my best friend, go take care of my sister, my family.
Please don’t make her go through it alone.

The only person I trust even a little is Vasili Zima, which is weird since I’m not sure if he wants to kill me or protect me.
